I think a lot of the hate for Michiru rises from internalized misogyny, and an immature association with masculine as strong and feminine as weak. I know Haruka and Michiru get a lot of flack for embodying a “typical” butch/femme dynamic (which… happens, there are people who are more butch and people who are more femme, and they do fall in love), but it’s really not stereotypical in any toxic ways. Michiru is never portrayed as the “weaker” one, as the essay above elaborates. I think that’s an assumption that people pulled from her reserved femininty, as opposed to Haruka’s brash extroversion, and extrapolated from there.
People are also quick to say “Well, Michiru’s really the stronger one…”, as if they want to collect insight accolades or distance themselves from any accusations of hetero-normative modeling or hatred of femininity. Which isn’t the truth, either. Both characters are strong, in different ways, at different times. It’s a very human and complex dynamic.
ohmygosh thank you. Exactly this!!!! I mean femme and butch people do exist and it’s a valid identity, which is why I’m eeeeh when people dismiss it as stereotypical because like that’s sort of hurtful to real people who identify that way?- like you said, there’s nothing toxic about the way they present themselves or their relationship is portrayed, because they’re both proud of and admired for who they are and they’re absolutely equals in a complex relationship- it isn’t a “hetero relationships with a dominant man and submissive woman are clearly the only model” thing imo.
And I absolutely agree they’re both strong and in different ways. I’m hesitant to declare someone “stronger” as a person in a relationship anyway.
(Even Usagi and Mamoru ftr- though Usagi’s definitely stronger than him re powers and she’s the general rescuer etc I think Mamoru’s just as strong as a person in a different way so)
